ABOUT ME
I’m Jens Christian Thordal Poulsen – a lawyer by training and an entrepreneur by practice. My work sits at the intersection of law, finance, and business-building, where structure, negotiation, and execution matter as much as ideas.
I hold an LL.M. from the University of Southern Denmark and an Executive MBA (Finance) from the American University in Dubai. That combination has shaped how I operate: I approach opportunities with a legal mindset (risk, incentives, enforceability) and a financial mindset (returns, capital structure, downside protection). I’m naturally drawn to complex problems – especially the ones that require both precision and pragmatism.
Building businesses early
I started my first company at 19. Before that, I sold boats, installed boat equipment, and worked in sales at Denmark’s largest telecom company and became the top salesperson out of roughly 10,000 employees. That experience taught me two things that still guide me today: how to communicate value clearly, and how to stay disciplined about performance.
My early entrepreneurial career included building ventures across very different industries – from automotive and luxury markets to retail and consumer services. The common denominator was always the same: identifying a structural advantage, building a clear operating model, and executing hard.
One of the pivotal moments in my career was spotting how evolving EU rules and Danish tax practice created an opening in vehicle financing. I founded one of the first companies in Denmark approved by the Danish Tax Authorities for what became widely known as “flexleasing.” Today, the model is mainstream in Denmark, and it cemented a long-term professional interest of mine: tax and regulation as strategic tools.
Investing and structuring
Over time my focus expanded from operating companies to investing and deal structuring. I work hands-on with acquisitions, financing, and governance – often across jurisdictions – where the details are decisive: shareholder rights, guarantees, repayment mechanics, covenants, and alignment between capital providers and operators.
My activity spans both venture-backed companies and real-asset platforms. I’ve also been involved with businesses ranging from early-stage legal tech to established industrial operations.
People typically come to me for three reasons:
- Structure: turning complexity into clear agreements and decision paths
- Execution: moving projects forward with discipline, accountability, and speed
- Judgment: balancing ambition with risk control and long-term thinking
I value direct communication, high standards, and relationships built on trust. I also maintain close ties to academics and specialists, because the best outcomes often come from combining strong networks with independent thinking.
I’m continuously expanding my toolkit in areas that match the direction of modern capital and business: capital markets, international tax, AI, contracts, arbitration, and M&A. Not as theory, but as practical leverage in building and investing.
